The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
