Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – But It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined term emerged a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by doctors including paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a minor who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials rejects these allegations, just as it disavows everything it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted harmony has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
