Jujutsu Kaisen: The Execution Film Aims to Resolve the Anime's Major Controversy
JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is not precisely an original film. Rather, the recent movie from the Jujutsu Kaisen action franchise is a compilation of the show's sophomore season merged with the first two episodes of its third season, which launches the Culling Games storyline from the source material. This establishes Execution, which just got a fresh preview, the first way to watch the start of the next season ahead of its premiere in early 2026. The movie premieres in Japan on Nov. 7, and in the United States and Canada on December 5.
The Culling Games Plot
In the Culling Games storyline, Special Grade sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu makes his entrance into the show and is assigned by jujutsu higher-ups to execute his peer Yuji Itadori. Their long-awaited clash occurs for the first time on the cinema screen, and if the animators at the studio have something as special as the two-part Thunderclap episodes prepared for viewers this end-of-year period, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may end up being the gift that everyone has hoped for.
The "Thunderclap" Controversy
"Thunderclap" from season two is often hailed as a top-tier scene in anime history, in spite of the major issues in the previous year when the installments originally aired. It was reported that the creators were suffering from harsh deadlines to the extent, and the released version that was shown at the time was not fully polished and supposedly not what the team initially intended.
The Epic Battle
The scene features a much-hyped confrontation between two powerful sorcerers, Sukuna versus Mahoraga. It includes unique visual techniques, excellent direction, and intense action. A later Blu-ray release allowed the team to add additional scenes to expand the battle. So it seemed possible Execution could enhance the fight further. However, looking at the recent teaser, it's hard to tell if that battle has been given extra attention. It'd be a shame if it hadn't, because a sequence that grand has to be seen on the cinema screen with the optimal viewing experience.
The Second Season's Triumph
The second installment of JuJutsu Kaisen elevated the franchise to become the award-winning series of 2024, and when the Thunderclap episodes were aired consecutively, it was the subject of discussion for weeks in the animation fandom. Viewers were aware of the production challenges, which made them appreciate what they saw even more. People eagerly awaited to see if the disc version, released on March 18, would feature extra content to the battle or to see if it was refined somewhat, and were overjoyed to see precisely that, alongside color corrections, more motion, and altered color palette.
The Film's Potential
But the Blu-ray can only refine what has initially broadcast in the original airing, whereas the film has the opportunity to properly present the moment with more adjustments and completely new animated sequences.
A Magnum Opus
Currently, these episodes act as the masterpiece of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be treated as such by the studio, especially considering the issues they faced at the time. It's garnered the attention of anime fans all over the globe, and the Culling Games arc is a much-expected plotline of the following year. If Mappa wants to start the year off right, showcase the show's top scene once again in cinemas with the best interpretation we've seen yet.
