Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
