New research indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
