The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle during next summer’s World Cup will continue as scheduled, even after the Egyptian and Iranian football federations voiced objections about a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside External Festivities

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA will permit Pride flags inside the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the city experience outside of the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Context Behind the Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance Regarding Flags and Banners

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums on matchdays. While its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of flags being seized.

  • This special fixture concept was devised to highlight the city's proud history of advocating for inclusion and equality.
  • An artistic competition is underway to produce artwork to commemorate the occasion.
  • Planners are committed to ensuring all fans are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest throughout the tournament.

The region is home to a significant most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring everyone encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our part of the country,” the statement concluded.
